Lip augmentation is a finishing-touch cosmetic procedure that’s popular with many clients. Adding volume to the lips can restore youthful vitality or create a fullness that was previously only a dream. The Herschthal Practice of Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Fort Lauderdale, FL matches the lip augmentation product to the client’s desired appearance goals.
How Do Lip Injections Work?
The most common method to add volume to lips uses injectable dermal fillers. As the name implies, the injectable fills up the missing or lost volume in the lip area. Frequently, hyaluronic acid serves as the base for filler formulations. This acid already occurs naturally in the body, and as well as adding volume, it naturally attracts water to cells, aiding in the moisture retention process that’s often critical to youthful skin. Hyaluronic acid-based products have the advantage of safety and a natural look as compared to collagen and other lip injection products, and so these are the most common bases for contemporary dermal fillers.
Are All Hyaluronic Acid Products the Same?
No, each company manufacturing fillers uses their own proprietary mix. In fact, most create a range of products, each optimized for a specialized purpose. The Herschthal Practice chooses Restylane® Silk, Juvéderm®, and Juvéderm® Volbella as their go-to hyaluronic acid lip fillers.
Volbella is an injectable gel that defines and fills the lip area. This Juvéderm product includes lidocaine, a common local anesthetic, to minimize any application discomfort. The gel fills in the lips, and the hyaluronic acid attracts moisture. Juvéderm gels tend to diffuse well, so there’s a good natural blend with surrounding areas. Results typically last about one year.
Restylane® Silk is also designed expressly for the lip area. Restylane® products differ from some other hyaluronic acid fillers in the use of a particle formulation in their products. These tend to be less diffuse, remaining close to the injection site. For addressing deeper lines and wrinkles, this is often an advantage, since an area is built up more readily than with a diffuse product. Silk uses the particle formulation idea, but these particles are smaller than other Restylane® products. Silk also treats the vertical lines that often appear above the lip.
Do These Lip Fillers Have Side Effects?
It’s common for some swelling, bleeding, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites for a few days after treatment. This is normal and no cause for concern. In rare cases, these symptoms last longer or increase in severity.
