What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, caused by the mutation of pigment-producing cells. It grows very quickly and can soon become life-threatening if it is untreated for too long. Since it is caused by the cells responsible for pigmentation, a common sign of melanoma is the new or unusual growth of a mole. Melanomas can be flat or textured, irregularly shaped, and they vary widely in color from pink to black. The mnemonic, “ABCDE” helps assess a spot that needs immediate medical assessment:

  • A – The spot is asymmetrical, not round
  • B – The borders of the spot are uneven or ragged in appearance
  • C – Unusual or uneven colors indicate potentially troubling spots
  • D – Those spots with a diameter larger than one-quarter inch should be checked
  • E – A spot that is evolving

If you notice any of these developments, you should schedule a cancer screening as soon as possible.

How is Melanoma Treated?

We recognize that melanoma is a serious condition, so we take a full team approach to ensure that we are treating melanoma patients to the best of our ability. At The Herschthal Practice, melanoma treatment involves a surgical oncologist, a melanoma pathologist, and a plastic surgeon. Treatment most often includes surgery such as Mohs surgery. With Mohs surgery, cancerous skin tissue is removed layer by layer, ensuring the complete removal of cancerous cells while minimizing damage to healthy cells in the area. We specialize in Mohs surgery and other cancer treatments to make sure our patients have access to the care they need.

What is Recovery Like Following Melanoma Treatment?

The recovery from melanoma treatment will depend on the extent of the surgery. In most cases, patients are fully recovered within a week or two of treatment. At this point, they are able to return to work and other normal activities without any problems.
