Although moles are generally harmless, many people want them removed for cosmetic reasons. If you live in Boca Raton, Delray or Boynton Beach, FL, you can trust the Herschthal Practice for your mole removal and other skin care needs.

What Are Moles?

Moles are small growths on the skin that are caused by pigment-producing cells, appearing as darkened spots of skin. These growths are usually harmless, but may be a cosmetic feature that some people would like removed. In rare cases, moles can become cancerous, in which case they would require removal.

When Can Moles Be Dangerous?

In some cases, sudden growth or abnormal growth of a mole can be a sign of skin cancer. To determine if you should be concerned about a mole, use the following mnemonic:

  • A – The mole is asymmetrical, not round
  • B – The borders of the mole are uneven or ragged in appearance
  • C – Unusual or uneven colors indicate a potentially troubling mole
  • D – Those moles with a diameter larger than one-quarter inch should be checked
  • E – A mole that is evolving

If you think that your mole needs to be examined, schedule a cancer screening with us today. We will be able to quickly determine if your mole is cancerous and recommend the appropriate treatments if necessary.

How Are Moles Removed?

Moles can be removed with a variety of techniques, and the appropriate technique can depend on the size of the mole, its location, and the patient’s preference. Most often, the mole is removed with surgical excision. With this technique, the mole is cut out of the skin. This is often the method used if the growth needs to be examined for cancerous cells, as it can be easily examined after removal. In some cases, moles can be removed with cryotherapy. This treatment uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the mole. After treatment, the mole will gradually shrink and fall off of the skin.

What Can I Expect After Mole Removal?

Depending on the treatment used to remove your mole, results can be instantaneous or they may happen gradually over the days following treatment. In any case, patients are typically able to resume normal activities after their appointment. If your mole needs to be examined for cancerous cells, we will let you know what to expect during your initial appointment.
