What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic therapy, or PDT, is an advanced treatment that uses a topical solution in combination with light energy to treat a variety of skin conditions. PDT is most often used to destroy cancer cells, but can also be an effective solution for acne and other skin conditions. At The Herschthal Practice, we use BLU-U® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy for PDT treatments.

What is Photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation is a restoration technique that uses PDT to reduce wrinkles and sun damage while improving the texture of the skin. This is done by eliminating damaged skin and stimulating collagen production, encouraging skin to grow back healthier and more radiant than before. As a result, patients can achieve a more youthful appearance without the use of surgery and other invasive techniques.

What Can I Expect from Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

The first step of PDT is the application of a photosensitizer, which is the topical solution that will be activated with light therapy. After application, there is a brief period before treatment that allows the solution to be absorbed by the skin. Then, we use blue light energy to activate the medication. At this point, the solution will destroy the cancerous cells or other targeted cells in the treatment area. Patients may experience a mild stinging sensation during this process depending on the extent of their treatment.

How is Recovery After PDT?

After PDT, patients typically experience redness or dryness that is similar to a sunburn. These effects will fade within a few weeks, and should not affect your ability to return to work or perform other regular activities. During this time, it is important to protect the skin from excessive sun exposure. As the skin heals, you will begin to notice the results from treatment. In some cases, multiple treatments will be necessary to achieve the desired results.
