What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition in which patches of skin become darker. This darkening is caused by brown skin pigment, called melanin, forming deposits in the skin. Hyperpigmentation can affect people of all ethnicities, and commonly develops as a result of sun damage. In some cases, hyperpigmentation symptoms can fade on their own. Unfortunately, this process can take years and may never happen at all, leading many to pursue medical treatment.

How is Hyperpigmentation Treated?

As hyperpigmentation can be caused by sun damage, our first recommendation is that patients protect themselves from harmful sunlight and be mindful of their sun exposure. For treatment, many patients achieve significant results with a combination of topical medications, chemical peels, and prescription skin bleaching. These processes slowly remove the damaged skin to produce a more even skin tone. In resistant cases, we may recommend laser treatments such as laser skin resurfacing.

When Will I Notice Results from Hyperpigmentation Treatment?

Most patients notice a gradual improvement in their skin tone over the weeks following treatment. Skin bleaching produces more noticeable results, but all of the treatments above contribute to a reduction in skin discoloration over time. In most cases, patients will need multiple treatments to achieve their desired results.
