Acne treatment

While acne is a condition most often associated with adolescents, acne can affect patients at any age and of any gender. The Herschthal Practice provides one-stop care for any acne-related issues to residents of Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Delray Beach, FL.

What Causes Acne?

Acne occurs when pores in the skin become clogged with dead skin cells. Usually, these cells simply shed off the top layer. Natural body oil production increases during puberty, causing the dead skin cells to stick and clump together, and ultimately clog pores. Bacteria that live on the skin can also get trapped in the pore, and from there, multiply quickly. Inflammation appears as a red swollen bump or pimple on the skin. When the inflammation is deeper, an acne cyst can form.

An acne diagnosis is usually made visually, on a graded scale from 1-4, with 4 being the most severe. Other conditions can seem like acne, so proper dermatological diagnosis is important.

How is Acne Treated?

Acne is a stubborn skin condition that requires a highly personalized treatment plan and persistence. In most cases, it is not enough to simply use prescription acne medications or topical solutions. At The Herschthal Practice, we thoroughly assess a patient’s skin to develop a treatment plan that involves a combination of techniques. This way, we ensure a truly individualized treatment that will be as effective as possible.

Most acne treatments involve some sort of medical treatment, such as topical or oral medications. These are typically prescription, offering more strength than medications that can be purchased over the counter.

In addition to medical treatment, we may recommend some degree of in-office physical treatment. This may include chemical peels or drainage and extraction treatments. In some cases, we may also recommend laser or light therapy. Treatments such as BLU-U® blue light photodynamic therapy can help reduce bacteria in the skin, preventing acne breakouts.

Are There Treatments for Acne Scar Removal?

Acne scarring is one of the largest concerns of acne patients. Even after your acne is gone, acne scarring can be a long-lasting reminder of what once was. At The Herschthal Practice, we offer scar removal/revision treatments for all types of scars, including acne scarring. With just a few treatments, patients will notice a reduction in the severity of their acne scars and enjoy clearer skin. Chemical peels can also be an effective solution for minor scarring.

What Can I Do at Home to Reduce Acne?

The Herschthal Practice recommends the following tips for skin care:

  • Wash twice daily and after perspiring heavily
  • Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser, applied with the fingertips, to prevent irritation from a washcloth or sponge
  • Use gentle care skin products, and avoid those with alcohol, astringents, exfoliants or toners
  • Scrubbing may aggravate acne, so avoid vigorous washing
  • Use lukewarm, rather than hot, water
  • Shampoo daily, particularly when hair is naturally oily
  • Avoid picking, popping and squeezing, which extend clearing time and risk scarring
  • Stay out of the sun and don’t use tanning beds, since some acne treatments increase ultraviolet light sensitivity
