What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer, occurring in the body’s squamous cells, which are located in the outermost layer of the skin. These cancerous growths are caused by extended sun exposure, and look quite similar to basal cell carcinoma growths. They look like open sores or scaly patches in the skin, typically developing on the face, neck, and other areas that are commonly exposed to the sun. Squamous cell carcinoma is easy to treat when detected early. However, if left untreated, it can spread and become a threat to the rest of the body.

How is Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treated?

Depending on the severity of the condition, there are a number of treatment options available for squamous cell carcinoma. For less severe cases, we may recommend cryotherapy. This involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze the growth, destroying cancerous cells. Over the following weeks, the treated area will crust and fall off the skin. In other cases, we may recommend Mohs surgery. With Mohs surgery, the cancerous tissue is carefully removed layer by layer, minimizing the damage done to healthy skin tissue. After each layer is removed, it is examined under a microscope to ensure that every cancerous cell has been eliminated. This process is repeated until the cancerous tissue is completely removed.

How is Recovery After Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment?

Recovery after squamous cell carcinoma treatment will depend on the extent of treatment or surgery needed to eliminate the cancerous cells. Generally, patients are fully recovered from treatment within a week or two of their appointment. After this time, they are able to resume work and other regular activities. In some cases, we may recommend that you avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for a number of weeks after your treatment.
