These arise due to several sources. Sun damage is perhaps the biggest contributor to any skin degradation. Natural aging causes similar effects, but over a longer time. Smoking increases the deterioration of skin as well, speeding the effects of aging and sunlight.
All of these causes start to break down collagen and elastin in the middle layers of the skin. Every layer of the skin thins and loses elasticity. No longer recovering completely from smiles, frowns and other displays of emotion, hyperactive expression lines form and hold, creating wrinkles, frown, and worry lines.
Called neuromodulators, these substances paralyze facial muscle contractions, easing up the hyperactive muscles and relaxing them, giving the skin a smoother appearance. Injections of botulinum neuromodulators are made locally, at the site of the expression line being treated. Depending on the brand of botulinum toxin and its concentration, effects occur over varying periods of time though the duration of the relaxing effect remains about the same for each, between 3 and 4 months, on average.
The Herschthal Practice uses three botulinum type A neuromodulators under the brand names Botox ®, Dysport ®, and Xeomin ®. Each works on the same principle and using the same active ingredient. Variations among the three FDA approved neuromodulators are at the molecular level, and some patients feel they respond differently to each. Botox ® has the most proteins surrounding the active ingredient core. Dysport ® has the second most amount of protein surrounding the active core. Xeomin ® doesn’t include additives and is often referred to as ‘naked.’ Some patients may feel they build a resistance to botulinum toxin injections over time. When this is the case, a different brand is usually tried. The Herschthal Practice will help you determine which FDA approved brand is best for your individual needs.
