What Are Juvéderm® Products Made From?

Juvéderm ® products are hyaluronic acid-based fillers that are injected into areas of the face and nasolabial folds to smooth wrinkles, and/or add volume.

Hyaluronic acid’s primary cosmetic use is as an inert filler to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It is a popular choice as a wrinkle eraser, lip enhancer, and fine line reducer. Unlike botulinum toxin injections, hyaluronic acid has no neuromodulating effect. There’s no induced muscle relaxation. Instead, the filler rests in the “valleys” that form wrinkles, filling these up so that thinner, aging skin can’t fall as deeply into these crevasses. The goal is to restore a more youthful shape and rejuvenated appearance to the face.

Which Juvéderm® Product is Right for Me?

The Juvéderm ® filler suited for any patient depends on the target area of the face. For example, over time, lips tend to thin out and vertical lines appear, giving an older look to the mouth area. Juvéderm Ultra XC® and Volbella® target these areas. Ultra XC® offers more aggressive lip augmentation, while Volbella® is more subtle. Those looking to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines may be suited for Juvéderm Volbella ®. This filler provides up to one year of results in these applications. The Volbella ® formula is an injectable gel intended for lip enhancement and smoothing fine lines.

Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus® formulations provide volume to deeper areas of the face. Volume loss in the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, chin, and temple are examples of areas that these formulations can be used to achieve an overall more youthful and refreshed look.

Juvéderm Voluma XC® aims at the cheeks, which also suffer the effects of aging, flattening as the skin thins and fat pads in the face deflate. The effect is known as midface volume loss. This product provides an injectable gel intended to volumize deeper areas, something that a Botox®-like injection won’t provide.

Are There Risks with Injectable Fillers?

While soft tissue fillers have FDA approval for cosmetic use, as with any medical procedure there is some level of risk. There may be minor swelling or redness at the injection site, but this usually disappears in a few days. Certain patients may be more likely to react to the product once placed in the tissue. A complete medical history will be taken prior to cosmetic treatments. Vascular compression or occlusion is the most serious risk associated with injectable fillers. This can be reversed with proper recognition and treatment. The importance of having these procedures performed by experts should not be underestimated.
