What is the Plasma Pen?

One of the latest and greatest things that technology has to offer aesthetic dermatology is the Subnovii Plasma Pen! A plasma pen is a handheld tool that can mitigate wrinkling, collagen loss, and the subsequent skin sagging that occurs after this loss of collagen. It is a non-invasive method of treating all of those aforementioned issues and it is also FDA approved. The handheld device is a convenient way to administer fibroblast therapy, which is a technique that stimulates collagen production in the skin.

What is Fibroblast Treatment?

Using the plasma pen, phenomenal lifting, tightening, and rejuvenating effects can be imparted onto the skin. The plasma pen works by imparting heat into tiny columns in the skin. The surface is subject to microtrauma and heat is conducted through those columns deeper into the skin which stimulates collagen production through heat. The upper dermal layer of the skin receives very minor damage as a result, but once it heals, the end result is firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

You can tell a plasma pen is being used by the iconic tiny little black dots that will line the treatment area.

What Are Some Issues The Plasma Pen Can Treat?

The Plasma Pen can help with a variety of common spots where the skin becomes wrinkled or saggy. Some such problems are:

  • Post acne scars
  • Crow’s feet around the edges of the eyes
  • Smile Lines as well as “marionette” lines—which are the lines that run down the corners of your mouth towards your chin
  • Lower and upper eyelids.
  • Various lines across the forehead

Cost of Plasma Pen vs Laser Treatment

Laser treatments are typically more involved in terms of downtime and more expensive than a plasma pen treatment. While they can be highly effective in certain scenarios, the overall effectiveness, and versatility of Plasma Pen treatment can be a fantastic alternative to procedures such as laser skin resurfacing.

In contrast, the Plasma Pen is more affordable—especially considering how many choices you have in terms of the area of treatment. You could choose to do forehead lines today and several months down the line opt to do another area. It can be split up quite easily.

Is There Downtime With Plasma Pen Treatment?

This one is tricky.

In terms of true downtime such as after surgery where you must rest and recover, there is no downtime. However, the plasma pen does leave some obvious signs of a procedure being done, such as the tell-tale small black dots that will require some time to go away.

You will most likely experience redness, swelling as well as scabbing in the area the treatment was performed. It will take anywhere from a week or a week and a half to “recover”. By all accounts, swelling should go down after 3-4 days at most. As with all healing times, those are just general guidelines and depending on your personal regenerative abilities, it will vary.
