Cosmetic dermatology techniques have come a long way in just the past few decades. Where there was once only just a handful of options—sometimes even just a single option to deal with a particular issue such as acne or scarring in the past, there are now an ample amount of tools to use depending on the situation at hand. One of those tools is laser skin resurfacing, which we’ll be covering a couple of reasons where it would be best applied.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Before we jump into the reasons, it would be helpful to outline what laser skin resurfacing is exactly. Laser skin resurfacing is a bit different than something like our Plasma Pen treatments. Like we discussed above, the right tool for the right job is important. Laser skin resurfacing is a powerful treatment due to the strength of lasers compared to other methods. Laser skin resurfacing (when using an ablative laser) will peel off upper layers of skin to stimulate the wound recovery process for your body, thus leaving you with a renewed appearance. Non-ablative methods do not remove the upper layer but instead work from within to stimulate collagen production. We use the Deka Tetra laser for ablative procedures and Cynosure’s Icon laser for non-ablative procedures.

Depending on your needs, ablative or non-ablative lasers are used. When you visit The Herschthal Practice, you will receive an in-depth consultation which will go over what the best options are for your particular needs from either David or Jordana Herschthal, we look forward to seeing you!

That being said, let’s dive into the reasons:

1 – If You Have Acne-Related Scarring

Acne is a difficult thing to endure, especially when you consider that it most impacts adolescents. Many young kids and teens are very sensitive about how they look and acne can make that much more difficult than it already is. Most people stop breaking out nearly as much once their teen years are over, however some individuals still suffer through acne and it’s related problems well after that.

One of those issues is acne-related scarring in severe cases of acne. It is bad enough to experience it, but to be left with scars after the fact can make this a very debilitating thing to deal with. Many people self-report that their acne and scarring prevented them from living their ideal social life or pursuing romantic options, even getting in the way of their career success due to lack of self-confidence.

Laser skin resurfacing can dramatically help reduce the appearance of the typical pockmarked scarring that is present in individuals who have had multiple significant acne breakouts.

2 – Laser Skin Resurfacing for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are line-like markings on the skin that are a different texture than the rest of the skin. They appear to be a cause of stretching the skin though this is not always the case. The two most common groups of people who experience stretch marks are women who have given birth or those who are or have been overweight/obese.

How severe the markings get can be a factor of genetics, cortisone levels, and how much stress/stretch was placed on the skin. Cortisone is known to weaken the elastic fibers that are present in the skin. Too much cortisone is typically a byproduct of having a perpetually activated adrenal response—AKA stress.

Regardless of how you got here, laser skin resurfacing can help greatly in dealing with stretch marks.

3 – Improving Uneven Skin Tone

Hyperpigmentation—otherwise known as uneven skin tone occurs typically due to an abundance of melanin in the skin. This can happen naturally in some cases, or it can be due to lifestyle factors such as sun exposure. The melanin production ramps up to protect skin from UV light, but that alone cannot prevent the inevitable sun damage that comes from frequent sun exposure.

Some times hyperpigmentation can be a result of acne-related scarring or skin injury. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and it is another reason why laser skin resurfacing can be a blessing in terms of achieving a more even skin tone and improved appearance.
